Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:4-7)
There is no real evidence recorded to prove that Jesus’ birth was dated December 25th. Though there is a lot of recorded history around the origin of Christmas as we know it today. Jesus is the center of it all today. I think that says a lot about our society and Christianity as a whole. Christianity has a powerful impact on our world so much so that Jesus is the center of the end of the year.
So many unbelievers scoff at saying Merry Christmas. Also, in western culture the job market has rules around the holiday season. The rules include whether employees can say Merry Christmas or require only Happy Holidays when working with customers or clients the company serves. Some Christians have learned the history and no longer feel that celebrating Christmas is appropriate.
The Christmas holiday has definitely been overly commercialized in western cultures. It has been so commercialized that many Americans opt not to celebrate and indulge in buying and spending money they really don’t have.
We live in a time where Christmas has evolved. It is important to know the history. As we look back and gather the history, we must remember that celebrating Jesus’ birth is a time of godly fellowship. Jesus’ birth into our world changed everything. Jesus still reigns today.
Celebrating and honoring Jesus’ birth will always be worth it during the holiday season. When looking back at the Christmas holiday origin and history people will always see ungodly things. History often shows us the errors of the past. History proves where things begin, but it also shows us how they evolve.
In the 21st century, we have more ways to educate ourselves on the past, but it is evident that Christmas gives us an opportunity to celebrate the birth of our Savior. We are able to fellowship with our loved ones and show them how much they mean to us. We do this to remember the One who came into this world to pay it all for us. His birth changed everything, and this is why we celebrate Christmas today.
