We live in a world where many of us are scrolling and following people all over social media. I am just as guilty as anyone else. I was sitting in my room the other night and God asked me “Are you following Me or all these people that you don’t know? I thought God if I am honest, I have been following people more than I read your word or follow you as closely as I should be. This should not be when we call ourselves believers and followers of Christ.
As I examined myself, I realized over the past six years I adopted the world’s view of following a bunch of people. Following people who are lining their pockets with every click and video I watch. Also, a lot of times they are doing ungodly things. They are doing things that I know God is not pleased with me watching or listening to.
I ask you the same question; Are you following God or a bunch of people on social media you don’t know? Are you spending time with God or scrolling through your phone trying to keep up with influencers or celebrities? This is an age-old thing. It was magazines that kept us in the know many years ago. Times have changed and now we get front row seats into the lives of so many strangers. People who may not even have a relationship with God. Though this is true we still tune in, watch, and listen.
What does God’s word say about following ungodly people?
Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14)
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2)
God’s word clearly teaches us that we should not be just following anybody no matter how entertaining their content is. We should have a standard of who we will or will not follow. My godmother has a standard and she sticks to it and does not compromise. That is something to marvel at or admire. Many of us will follow whoever because it feels good to our flesh. We never examine whether God is pleased with it or not. We just do it.
Many of us believe “I can do what I want to do” or “nobody is going to tell me what I can or cannot do. Well, I am here to tell you your life is not your own. “Know that the Lord, He is God. It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture” (Psalm 100:3). It belongs to God to be used for His glory. We are not puppets but we each have an assignment by God for our lives. Not everyone will make it into the kingdom. No one knows who will or will not make it into heaven. Only God knows. God examines the heart. He is the only One who can rightly determine the condition of our spiritual hearts.
The truth of the matter is we are called to reverence God and follow Him because He created us. He wakes us up every day. He gives us food on our table. He gives us shelter. He protects us on the dangerous highways. He provides for our families and children. He gives us the grace to have desires of our heart. He gives us every breath we breathe.
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth“ (Genesis 1:26).
No one has an easy or perfect life. We all have many areas that need some improvement. In order for this to happen we need to be following God. He has everything we need to help us become who He has called us to be. No influencer or celebrity can provide that. Only God can.
Are you following God or man?
